To the wealthy pioneer who erected the stone mansion now occupied by this B&B, expense was no object. A 50-foot-long planked maple floor is the pride of the great room, the carpentry on the walls throughout is intricate, and huge stone fireplaces warm the house on the rare cold night. Original fixtures still gleam in the bathrooms, and bedrooms hold pencil and canopy beds and some fireplaces. The innkeepers serve afternoon tea and evening dessert. An acre of gardens shaded by Washingtonia palms surrounds the house. Pros: Elegant rooms and public spaces, good stargazing in the gazebo, great horned owls on property. Cons: Somewhat isolated location, three-story main building doesn't have an elevator.
