Fodor's Review:

The funky 29 Palms is the lodging closest to the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. The collection of adobe and wood-frame cottages, some dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, is scattered over 70 acres of grounds that are popular with birds and bird-watchers year-round. Innkeeper Jane Smith's warm, personal service more than makes up for the cottages' rustic qualities. Ranging from pasta to seafood, the contemporary fare at the inn's convivial restaurant ($$) is more sophisticated than its Old West appearance might suggest. Pros: Gracious hospitality, exceptional bird-watching, popular with artists. Cons: Rustic accommodations, limited amenities.

this is as nice as you hope it will be

laid back and stylish - california "shabby chic" apparently - but at a very reasonable price. the adobe bungalows are charming and have open fires set and ready to light. live music by the pool every night - and it's good. the staff all actually seem to enjoy what they do and everything is relaxed and friendly but very efficient. nice food too. make sure you book for dinner as they get busy (but they're the sort of people who will do their best to accommodate you even if you forget). we stayed 4 nights at the end of march 07 and we loved it. great base for joshua tree np
