The Spanish-style Historic Plaza Theatre opened in 1936 with a glittering premiere of the MGM film Camille. In the '40s and '50s, it presented some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra. Today it plays host to the hottest ticket in the desert, the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies (www.palmspringsfollies.com), which mounts 10 weekly sell-out performances November through May. The vaudeville-style revue, about half of which focuses on midcentury nostalgia, stars extravagantly costumed, retired (but very fit) showgirls, singers, and dancers. Acts scheduled for 2008 include the Four Aces and Anna Maria Alberghetti. Tickets are $48 to $90. In addition to the follies, the theater is home to a January film festival and is favored by fans of old-time radio even in the off-season.
