Built in 1946 as a bunkhouse for Western film stars shooting in Pioneertown, this motel sticks close to its roots. The clean rooms are named for the stars who stayed in them while filming in Pioneertown in the 1950s and 1960s—Gene Autry, Gail Davis, and Barbara Stanwyck—and are as simply furnished as they would have been back then. Hiking trails outside the motel lead into the desert. Bring your horse—there are corrals for visiting animals. Pros: Western movie time warp, great stargazing, horses welcome. Cons: No frills, small rooms, hot in summer.
