Like Los Angeles, Orange County stretches over a large area, lacks a singular focal point, and has limited public transportation. Every community in the region has a distinct personality, from the vibrant Vietnamese-influenced Westminster to Huntington Beach, where blond surfer dudes and babes still rule. You'll need a car and a sensible game plan to make the most of your visit. There are many options for lodging throughout the county, but if you can afford it, staying at the beach is always recommended.

The Coast. Orange County's magnificent coastline is lined with a variety of vibrant communities, from unpretentious surf towns like Seal Beach to glamorous oceanfront enclaves like Corona del Mar. All share spectacular Pacific views buffered by generous swaths of protected beachfronts and plenty of recreational opportunities. And after a stunning sunset, both biker bars and romantic bistros await their respective clienteles.

Inland Orange County. Culturally diverse and cosmopolitan, the inland cities of Orange County——offer world-class arts venues, and beguiling ethnic neighborhoods, and great shopping.

Catalina Island. This mountainous island has a charming seaside village ideal for sportsman, artists, and romantics, and a rugged interior as unspoiled as any part of the Golden State.
