Long the mainstay of parents visiting their children at U.C. Berkeley, this hotel is a good option for those who want to be a short walk from campus and the restaurants and shops of Telegraph Avenue. The rooms, updated in 2006 with new bathrooms and dark wood set against deep jewel tones, are small without feeling cramped. The historic photos of Berkeley highlight the hotel's storied past, and the central location is perfect for the car-less. The hotel bar, Henry's, is where U.C. Berkeley sports fans congregate to watch football games. Guests receive free passes to the extensive Cal Recreational Sports Facility, known as RSF.

Overpriced and worn, but comfortable and convenient for parents visiting Cal. Caution: no air conditioning, and when it's hot for those last two weeks in summer when you are dropping your kids off, you will just steam, the overhead fan doing nothing but moving hot air. If your room is on Dorm "Unit 1" side, you will honestly feel like you're in one of the dorms, especially during welcome week if you have to leave your window open all night to breathe. I don't mind noise, so for me it was kind of fun leaning out the window and watching kids get a bit rowdy at night, but for those not young of heart or spirit, I'm sure this will be really annoying.
The lobby is really nice, and Henry's is great.
