Vine Street

Fodor's Review:

Vine Street is another culinary destination. In a historic building Vintage Berkeley (2113 Vine St. 510/665-8600) gathers locals in its large front garden for nightly wine-tastings of California wines from smaller vineyards. Take the stairs up to the top floor of Walnut Square to find Love at First Bite (1510 Walnut St., Suite G. 510/848-5727), a cupcakery showcasing scrumptious confections. Twig & Fig (210 Vine St., Suite B. 510/848-5599) invites you in for a peek at its three rhythmically clacking letterpresses. Stop in for one-of-a-kind papery gifts and publications such as Inside the Brambles, a local's guide to Tilden Park. Of all the coffeehouses in caffeine-crazed Berkeley, the one that deserves a pilgrimage is Peet's (2124 Vine St. 510/841-0564). When this, the original, opened at Vine and Walnut streets in 1966, the unparalleled coffee was roasted in the store and brewed by the cup. Named after the Dutch last name of the founder, Peet's has since expanded, but this isn't a café where you can sit on sofas or order quiche. It's strictly coffee, tea, and sweets to go.
