Elmwood

Fodor's Review:

South of campus, along College Avenue between Ashby Avenue and Claremont, shops and cafés pack the area known as Elmwood, a local favorite for browsing. Generations of Berkeleyites have enjoyed BLTs and sundaes at the counter of Ozzie's Soda Fountain (2900 College Ave. 510/841-0989), the last pharmacy soda fountain in the Bay area, open since 1921 inside the Elmwood Pharmacy. The menu tops out at $5. Nabolom Bakery (2708 Russell St. 510/845-2253), which has been around since 1976, is a workers' collective where politics and delicious pastries collide. Shingled houses line tree-shaded streets nearby.
