Fodor's Review

This chic Spanish colonial oasis on 400 tree-shaded acres has ample guest rooms, in shades of brown and sand with oversize chairs and sofas; public rooms filled with dark wood, open-beam ceilings, paneling, crystal chandeliers, and leather and wrought-iron furnishings. The family-friendly resort offers a kids' club, Kidtopia, and has a teen lounge, Vibz, as well as seven swimming pools, three waterslides, and a water play zone. There are two PGA championship golf courses,

a large tennis center, a family entertainment area, and state-of-the-art bikes in the fitness center (with excellent fairway views).

great vacation. We will return

My husband had to be at the resort for business/meeting/golf. We(including our 13 year old daughter) decided to tag along with him and visit San Diego and Los Angeles. This is a great spot for golf, resort relaxing, beach and home base for site seeing. I would love to go back . Three days was not enough for me. Loved: Great spacious guest rooms. We stayed in a villa room with 2 queen beds(6410). The room was more than spacious. In perfect condition.

The bathroom was enormous. It had double sinks, separate shower big enough for an entire family. Huge tub and separate toilet area. It was about 20x12. There was a mini bar and working gas fire place, desk and a lovely outside terrace with teak table and chairs. When we arrived the a/c did not seem to be working. Engineering came quickly and reset it and it ran perfectly after that. There was also a ceiling fan. My husband was happy to find that the beds were triple sheeted. We had room service one night, just burgers, however they were delicious and prompt. I was impressed with room service, knowing that the kitchen had to be far from our room. There is this great village feel to the hotel. The market is a gift shop, snack, ice cream place. They have great gifts and very well merchandized. The take out food was fresh and yummy and healthy. My daughter loved the pizza. There was music playing in the evening and it had a fun up beat feeling. They have samore making every evening. We forgot to go and do it, however it seemed like a very fun idea and the kids we saw doing it loved it. You could buy samore making kits in the market. Loved the pool area near the villa. There are two pools and jacuzzi. Even though the hotel was full there were plenty of chairs. It was clean and kept very tidy. Loved the landscaping everywhere. The flowers were beautiful and plentiful. Loved the rod iron detailing around the hotel. It brought Spanish feeling to the hotel. Loved the fact that we were 10 minutes from a fabulous beach. As east coast folks we rarely get to swim and play on a west coast beach. It was fun and a treat. Concierge was very helpful and provided us with great ideas for shopping and sushi. The hotel is easy to find. Just a few minutes off I-5. Loved the easy access to highway for sightseeing. We drove to LA one day ( 2 hours) and San Diego ( 35 minutes). Did not use the pool/slide so can not comment. There did seem to be a lot of families with small children at the hotel. Did not love: At first I did not think that there was enough drawer space. It was not abundant, however it worked for the three of us. The sense of arrival/first impression was not the best. We arrived and could not find a bellman/doorman to help us. We did not realize that we would be driving to our room so we expected to unload our luggage at the check in area. There was no one at the circle welcoming new guests. They seemed more focused on retrieving valet parked cars. Was disappointed that the spa did not allow children under 18. We promised out daughter a spa treatment (facial) and were not able to do this at LaCosta. I understand it is because there are some clothing optional areas in the spa. Perhaps the hotel could offer in-room spa services for kids as an alternative. Kid pampering would have been fun for my 13 year old. We had to book a facial at the Park Hyatt Aviara as an alternative. Room Tip: The first floor villa rooms are great. Easy to get in and out of the pool area. It meant a little wa...
