Fodor's Expert Review Julian Gold Rush Hotel

2032 Main St., Julian, California, 92036, USA

Built in 1897 by freed slave Albert Robinson and his wife, Margaret, this old hotel is Julian's only designated national landmark and the oldest operating hotel in Southern California. The hotel offers antique-filled rooms with American period pieces, canopy beds, and handmade quilts. Cottage accommodations have private entrances, claw-foot tubs, and cast-iron fireplaces. Owners Steve and Gig Ballanger brought the old place into the 21st century, but it still feels thoroughly Victorian—afternoon tea is served and guests are invited to linger on the porch and watch the world go by. Complimentary full breakfast is served 8–9:30 in the parlor.
