This winery is a Merlot lover's paradise in a Cabernet Sauvignon world. When its founders were deciding what grapes to plant, they discovered that the climate and soil conditions resembled those of Pomerol, a region of Bordeaux where Merlot is king. Now owned by the Terlato family, Rutherford Hill has extensive wine caves—nearly a mile of tunnels and passageways. You can glimpse the caves and the barrels inside them on tours that include the Bordeaux meets Napa Tasting Experience ($75), an educational seated tasting of reserve and older wines. Entertaining make-your-own-Merlot blending sessions ($105) take place on Saturday. The winery's hillside picnic area, amid oak and olive trees, is a magical spot. Picnic packages ($100–$150) include wine, glasses, and a linen-covered table.
