Fodor's Expert Review Robert Louis Stevenson State Park

Calistoga Hiking & Walking

Hikers and bikers challenge themselves on this mostly undeveloped park's steep 10-mile trail to the summit of Mt. St. Helena. With no restrooms or potable water, the 5,272-acre remains as rough and tumble as it was in 1880, when Robert Louis Stevenson and his bride, Fanny Osbourne, celebrated their honeymoon in an abandoned bunkhouse of the Silverado Mine. Their stay inspired the writer's travel memoir The Silverado Squatters, and Spyglass Hill in Treasure Island is thought to be a portrait of Mt. St. Helena. A marble memorial marks the site of the bunkhouse. The trail lacks shade in spots, but the summit is often cool and breezy. You can see the Pacific Ocean and several far-off mountain ranges on a clear day. Bring plenty of water, and dress in layers.
