With its metal chandelier and wall hangings, the tasting room at this casual winery looks like a stage set for a modern Shakespearean production. (The name "PlumpJack" is a nod to Shakespeare's Falstaff.) A youngish crowd assembles here to sample vintages that include the citrusy reserve Chardonnay and a Merlot that's blended like a Cab, providing the wine sufficient tannins to ensure it can age at least another five years. The Syrah, from Atlas Peak and Carneros grapes,
is available only through the winery. The Hilltop Tasting takes in the cellar and grounds and ends with a seated tasting overlooking the vineyards. Limited to six guests, it books up quickly in summer.
