Fodor's Review

In 1979 the Napa Valley's Robert Mondavi and France's Baron Philippe de Rothschild joined forces to produce a single wine: Opus One, a Bordeaux blend that was the first of Napa's ultrapremium wines. From Highway 29 Opus One's futuristic limestone-clad structure, completed in 1991, seems to be pushing itself out of the earth, though on satellite maps it's clear it was situated to look like a wine glass, with the tree-lined driveway as the stem and the barrels in the semicircular underground cellar the wine the glass holds. Tours focus on the combination of agriculture, science, and technology required to create Opus One and conclude with a tasting of the current vintage. With a reservation, you can taste the wine without touring.
