Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot predominate at this bustling winery that in recent years has introduced two crowd-pleasing Sauvignon Blanc–based white blends. Winemaker Janet Myers's best reds—among them the Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet-heavy Magnficat blend—are bold yet smooth, with just enough tannins to build character but not overwhelm. The Cuvée Sauvage Chardonnay, fermented using only natural yeasts, is another standout. Light streams through the full-length clerestory window of the main tasting space. You can also sip wines in small, private rooms and, on weekends in summer and fall, on an outdoor patio. Franciscan also pours the complex red wines—including the truly lofty Cabernet Sauvignon Elevation 1550—of its separate Mount Veeder Winery.
