Jack and Dolores Cakebread were among the wave of early-1970s vintners whose efforts not only raised the Napa Valley's wine-making profile but also initiated what became known as the Wine Country lifestyle. Guests at standard tastings sample Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, which helped establish the company, along with Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and other current releases made in smaller lots. At any tasting you'll learn about the winery's interesting history—Jack was a photographer whose mentors included Ansel Adams—but book a tour for deeper insight. Cakebread makes so many different wines, some available only here or online, that you can opt for all-red or all-white tastings, or one focusing on single-vineyard, library, and limited-production wines. All tours and tastings are by appointment.
