Rutherford Hill Winery

Rutherford Hill Winery Review

This place is a Merlot lover's paradise in a Cabernet Sauvignon world. When the winery's founders were deciding what grapes to plant, they discovered that the climate and soil conditions resembled those of Pomerol, a region of Bordeaux where Merlot is king. Now owned by the Terlato family, the winery has some of the most extensive wine caves in California—nearly a mile of tunnels and passageways. You can get a glimpse of the tunnels and the 8,000 barrels inside on the tours, then cap your visit with a picnic amid oak or olive groves. With views over the valley from a perch high on a hill, the picnic grounds are more charming than many others in Napa.
