Napa and Sonoma Sights

The Hess Collection

The Hess Collection Review

About 9 miles northwest of Napa, up a winding road ascending Mt. Veeder, this winery is a delightful discovery. The simple limestone structure, rustic from the outside but modern and airy within, contains Swiss owner Donald Hess's personal art collection, including mostly large-scale works by contemporary artists such as Robert Motherwell, Anselm Kiefer, Robert Rauschenberg, and Francis Bacon. Cabernet Sauvignon is a major strength, and the Mount Veeder 19 Block Mountain Cuvée—available only at the winery and through the Hess wine club—shows off the Malbec and other estate varietals. Several food and wine pairings are available, including one with chocolates that go ever so well with the robust Mount Veeder Cabernet.
