Tranquil Bouchaine lies just north of the tidal sloughs of San Pablo Bay—to appreciate the setting, have your tasting on the back patio and scan the skies for hawks and golden eagles soaring above the vineyards. Patio tastings ($35) include cheeses, almonds, and olives. The alternately breezy and foggy weather in this part of the Carneros works well for the Burgundian varietals Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These account for most of Bouchaine's excellent wines, but also
look for Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Syrah. Tastings may end with the silky-sweet late-harvest Chardonnay called Bouche d'Or. Pick up a brochure if you're interested in taking a self-guided ¾-mile walking tour through the vineyards.
