Nichelini Family Winery
Nichelini Family Winery Review
A scenic drive east of the Silverado Trail winds past Lake Hennessey to Nichelini, the oldest family-owned and operated winery in the Napa Valley. Erected in the late 1800s by Swiss-Italian immigrant Anton Nichelini, the old winery buildings, still in use, cling to a steep embankment where the road skirts a cliff. The wines to taste—they're made by Anton's great-great-granddaughter Aimée Sunseri—are the Zinfandel, its Italian cousin the Primitivo, and the extra-crisp old-vine Muscadelle. The last grape often finds its way into blends, but here it makes a delightful single-varietal white wine redolent of tropical fruit. The winery is open for drop-in tastings on weekends, but if you call a few hours ahead, you can easily arrange a weekday appointment.
