Stretching from the Sonoma County line to the Napa River in the town of Napa, the eastern half of the Carneros shares the wine-growing climate and soils with the western half. Though you'll find the same rustic, relatively undeveloped atmosphere in eastern Carneros, wineries pop up more frequently along this stretch of Highway 121.
To take a break from wine tasting, grab a picnic lunch and take
Cuttings Wharf Road south to the Napa River, stop at the public boat ramp, and dangle your feet in the water. Keep a lookout for white egrets, great blue herons, wood ducks, and other waterfowl. But beware, as the waters here are tricky and rise and fall with the tide. If the bleak marshes to the south look familiar, this might be the reason: Francis Ford Coppola used this landscape for some of the Mekong Delta scenes for the film Apocalypse Now.
