This place is a Merlot lover's paradise in a Cabernet Sauvignon world. When the winery's founders were deciding what grapes to plant, they discovered that the climate and soil conditions resembled those of Pomerol, a region of Bordeaux where Merlot is king. Now owned by the Terlato family, Rutherford Hill has extensive wine caves—nearly a mile of tunnels and passageways. You can glimpse them and the barrels inside on the tours, and you can make your own Merlot at entertaining
Saturday blending sessions ($95). The winery's hillside picnic area, amid oak and olive trees, is a magical spot. The $35 picnic-reservation fee includes a $20 voucher toward the purchase of wine and two glasses.
