Sustainable farming is the big story at this family-run winery in the heart of Rutherford. Michael Honig, the grandson of founder Louis Honig, helped write the code of Sustainable Practices for the California Wine Institute and was a key player in developing the first certification programs for state wineries. Some of the modern applications of this mind-set: solar panels that generate a majority of the winery's power and an on-site bee colony that helps with pollination.
Michael and his wife, Stephanie, produce nothing but Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, and the awards they consistently win recognize the family's commitment to excellence. Because the Honigs have three young children, the winery is incredibly family friendly, with a special play area for toddlers.
