Fodor's Review

This boutique hotel on Cannery Row has beach access and a rooftop garden that overlooks the water. Designed in traditional American style, spacious rooms have sitting areas, hardwood floors, fireplaces, and down comforters, among other pleasures. Oceanside rooms have window seats; others open to balconies above Cannery Row. An afternoon wine and cheese hour takes place in the light-filled lobby, which has a soaring four-story ceiling.

Avoid the Cannery Row Rooms!

The Spindrift Inn has great rooms - too bad they don't double pane the doors on the rooms facing Cannery Row. Between the noise on the street late at night and the early morning delivery trucks, we could hardly sleep. The room was great though - nice bed and fireplace - very quaint. And it is in a great location. However, we almost didn't get it because the hotel had lost my reservation (good thing I called to confirm before we arrived). Their staff

also needs a lesson in "How to not disturb your hotel guests." Lesson #1: Do not power wash rugs right outside a guests door at 8:00 am. Unbelieveable. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if you were in an ocean view room and you told the front desk to make sure that the cleaning staff doesn't do anything loud outside your door. Also, don't book your room on the hotel web site - Expedia is WAY less expensive!

Didn't Love it, Didn't Hate it

This palce apparently has this effect on many of their guests. We had a ocean view room (which the beach really does not look as nice as it does on the brochure). I liked the decor of the room, the colors and the wood floors. We also enjoyed the wood burning fireplace and had no problems with smoke as we read the instructions about opening the windows and closing the bathroom door. The bed was ok (ours was only a queen) but I don't think it was as

comfortable as some of the other places we stayed. I think I was least impressed with the bathroom. I can't stand bathrooms that I don't feel are clean enough that I wouldn't want to take a bath in the tub (dirty tiles, rust on the shower head, etc..). The "marble" looked like cheap tiles that weren't in great condition. I think the best thing to say that would sum up the bathroom was that they tried to make it look as nice as it could but it looks kind of cheap and old. Breakfast in the morning was ok, nothing spectacular but we did enjoy having it delivered to our room. We only spent one night here and our main goal in Monterey was to see the Aquarium so it was an ideal place for close proximity to it. The rates are slightly overpriced but I didn't think it was outrageous. I did like the disclaimers about their valet service not being responsible for anything that happens to your vehicle. Basically your car is parked far enough away that I saw one hotel staff member give the valet a drive to where the cars are parked. In conclusion, the room and service weren't horrible but they defintily didn't give me a memorable experience either.

Romantic & Restful

I recently spent a week at the Spindrift while in town visiting friends and had a wonderful experience. My oceanfront room was well maintained and surprisingly well appointed for a property of its size. Bed canopy, down bedding, recessed lighting on dimmers, room-service breakfast on Limoges china (food, admittedly not up to the standards of the china!),binoculars to watch the wildlife in the bay, hardwood floors AND a gas fireplace--quite a list

of amenities in a 40room property. Though I was travelling alone, I can imagine how romantic the place must be with some company! I will say I felt the rack rates are surprisingly steep. However, I did some internet comparison shopping and found a rate that was literally less than 1/2 of what the hotel web site asked--which made it much more of an acceptable luxury. Check Expedia.com and/or cheaptickets.com and compare.

Grossly overrated!!

Grossly overrated hotel. The room lacked any ventilation. It was hot and if we opened the window we had the noise from a very busy street. The bathroom was mediocre at best. There was poor drainage in the bathtub and consequently it was flooded whenever we took a shower. However, the small staff was very, very nice.

Very Romantic Room And Setting

It was my first stay in Monterey, and based on numerous other domestic and international trips, the Spindrift was worth it. We had an Ocean View Corner Room which was very nice, romantic, and quiet. It was perfectly situated right on Cannery Row and a small beachfront. Nice large windows opened up to the cool air of Monterey Bay and the sounds of waves and sea gulls, yet just outside the front of the hotel was access to a wide variety of shops, restaurants,

and entertainment. The room was fairly large and very comfortable and included a fireplace. The service was extremely prompt and everyone working there seemed very pleasant and happy, from the bell desk, reservations desk, and even security. Atop the roof is a seating area with potted plants, and we were served drinks upon check-in. One trivial thing to note was that one far side of the view looked down at an adjacent restaurant's parking lot, and a request for two bagels for continential breakfast resulted in only one --- not enough to affect our trip. After leaving Monterey we stayed in the only Mobil Five Star rated hotel in San Francisco, in a mini suite for over twice the price, yet I couldn't help thinking I wish I was back in Monterey at the Spindrift.
