This three-story manor house was the home of Monterey's first mayor, and today it remains a private enclave within walking distance of downtown. Lush gardens are shaded by huge old trees and bordered by a creek. Rooms are individually decorated with tasteful antiques; many have fireplaces, and all have featherbeds. Those with private entrances have split doors; you can open the top half to let in cool air and the sound of birds. In the spa room, indulge in a massage or wrap in front of the fireplace. The extensive breakfast is delivered to the rooms, and wine, cheese, and cookies are served each afternoon in the parlor. Pros: Gorgeous gardens, refined luxury, serene. Cons: Must drive to attractions and sights, fills quickly.
