A few blocks from the historic Old Monterey, this modern hotel has a cool, adobe style. Two greenery-filled courtyards have a fountain and hot tub. Rooms—all of them junior suites—are updated Spanish colonial, with featherbeds, hardwood floors, fireplaces, and balconies or patios. The rates include afternoon tea, fruit, and cheese. Pros: Spanish feel, short walk to wharf and Cannery Row, extensive breakfast buffet. Cons: footstep sounds travel through the wood floors, some rooms seem dark.

This last visit to the Hotel Pacific will probably be the last time we will stay at this hotel, and we've stayed here at least 10 times. It's not because of the room, which is and always has been super -- too many amenities to name.
The problem this time that created the fed up factor was the intense nickel and diming that took place and the extremely obnoxious desk person -- I'm guessing a new manager, because he was always there and had this snide, arrogant manner about him that you knew the second you walked out the door, he was making some snide comment about the hotel guest.
Nickel & diming: You now have to pay one full day if you cancel withing 72 hours, and if you cancel at any time, there is the new imposition of a $25 fee, no excuses. $16/day to self park in a garage that does not have sufficient parking in the first place. $10/day PER laptop per room for dsl w/some program that over-rides the free public wifi.
Then comes the cost of the room itself. Because we have stayed so many times, we are always given the return discount (10% if I recall correctly) -- no more. They wanted to charge me $350/night when the internet had rooms for $230/night, and wouldn't give me the lower rate unless I booked online. Couldn't do that the first night, so was stuck with the $350/night. Then, rather than just say, stay with the same room for the remaining nights (as an accomodating upgrade for frequent guests), they made us move rooms, even though the better room was available.
Well, we haven't been to the Marriott right across the street for about 9 years, but I'm feeling that we'd rather have a nicer vibe from management than the great room we get at HP.
