Monterey Maritime Museum

Fodor's Review:

Maintained by the Monterey History and Art Association, this collection of maritime artifacts belonged to Allen Knight, who was Carmel-by-the-Sea's mayor from 1950 to 1952. Highlights are a collection of outstanding scrimshaw, including fully jointed pocketknives and a toy guillotine, and a lively movie from 1943 chronicling a day in the life of the cannery that used to stand where the aquarium is. The jewel in the museum's crown is the enormous, multifaceted Fresnel lens from the lighthouse at Point Sur Light Station.
