Fodor's Review

Breakfast here gets constant local raves. The café's fame rests on familiar favorites: a dozen kinds of omelets, and pancakes from blueberry to cinnamon-raisin-pecan. For lunch are good soups, salads, and sandwiches.

Old Monterey Café Review

If you are looking for a good place to have a hot breakfast, the Old Monterey Cafe is not what you are looking for. The food is mediocre at best, the coffee is terrible and the service atrocious. There are multiple breakfast spots in Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel where you may have a fresh and flavorful breakfast for about the same price as this cafe, however, if you get your thrills from the luke-warm bland and exceptionally poor service

- with excitement like charging someone else's bill to your card...twice, than this may be the place for you. Your call.

Skip the Old Cafe and Look for Something New

The downside of our trip was this breakfast nook. The aquarium was fantastic. But, I was unimpressed by this supposedly favorite place. While the atmosphere was OK , the cafe has been sustained on it's entry in Fodors more than it's service and food. The coffee and tea were undrinkable. Yep, even the tea was bad. The water wasn't being filtered from the tap water. The peninsula tap water is a bit tart and brackish. Mind, I'm not adverse to drinking

day old coffee. McDonalds -- dare I mention it -- makes decent coffee. The service was poor with a passing nod at mediocre. They got our order wrong and gave us more food and larger servings than what we ordered and then charged us for it and the coffee that I had sent back. Waiter had more of a mind for his percentage of the tab than the food we were looking for and/or the language barrier impaired his ability to understand us. Tourists won't mind the billing because they're there for the experience and will never come back. I would recommend doing some exploring for a nice little coffee shop. Montery is a delightful little city with charming locations all over the place. And the sea air in the morning helps build an appetite when you discover that new breakfast nook.
