Smoking is prohibited in many parts of Los Angeles -- inside and out. Violators face fines of $100-$500, so do your homework before lighting up. All enclosed public areas and workplaces, including restaurants, bars, and retail shops, are no-smoking zones. Recently passed ordinances have also banned cigarette smoking at Los Angeles County beaches and piers, as well as beaches in Santa Monica, Malibu, Newport Beach, and Huntington Beach. Owner-operated bars and restaurant patios are exempt from the smoking ban, but many follow a smoke-free policy anyway. Even outdoor malls may have designated smoking areas.
