Each of the three venues that comprise the Center Theatre Group—the Ahmanson, the Taper, and the Douglas—has its own style of shows, from premieres of plays written by notables like Culture Clash to touring productions of Broadway sell-outs like Matilda: The Musical.
Mark Taper Forum. The focus at Mark Taper Forum, next door to the Ahmanson Theater in Downtown, is on dramas and comedies. Plenty of shows that premiere here go on to Broadway and off-Broadway theaters (a number of Pulitzer Prize–winning plays have also been developed here). 135 N. Grand Ave., 90012. 213/628–2772. www.centertheatregroup.org.
Ahmanson Theatre. The largest of L.A.'s Center Group's three theaters is Ahmanson Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles with a varying audience capacity of 1,600 to 2,000, and a number of larger-scale
classic revivals, dramas, musicals, and comedies happen here. Recent musical “Leap of Faith” had its world premiere at Ahmanson Theatre and went on to earn a Tony Award nomination in 2012. 135 N. Grand Ave., 90012. 213/628–2772. www.centertheatregroup.org.
Kirk Douglas Theatre. This Culver City theater, which stages new, modern works, is the smallest venue of the group at 317 seats. It uses its small size to its advantage by hosting more intimate workshops and readings. 9820 W. Washington Blvd., Culver City, 90232. 213/628–2772. www.centertheatregroup.org.
