Hidden from bustling, increasingly hip 3rd Street, this friendly little taverna offers all the Greek classics: dolmades, spanakopita, souvlaki, and taramasalata (a creamy, salty dip made from fish roe). The smart, casual dining room is more than comfortable, but consider sitting outside on the lovely bougainvillea-shaded garden patio. All that's missing is a view of the Aegean Sea.

The food at Sofi is nearly perfect, light and full of flavor. The giant meze platter is worth the $10 per person, especially with a glass of retsina. Portions are huge, and the staff is (mostly) attentive. The bustle of L.A.'s streets disappears on the bougainvillea-covered patio. It is the perfect place to spend a warm summer evening.
