The first of what's now a small chain, this landmark south of Hollywood has been packing them in since the '20s. A hand-painted adobe ceiling and an outdoor patio with a fountain create a partylike atmosphere, which the bar's legendary margaritas can only enhance. The fare includes all kinds of Cal-Mex standards, including tacos, chicken enchiladas, carnitas (shredded fried pork), and, from July through October, their famous green-corn tamales.

I don't know if this place is what Jimmy Buffett was thinking when he wrote the song, but El Cholo's has always been know more for its great margaritas than for its food. The food is a good Californian impression of what they think Mexican food is, and very reasonably priced, but you come here primarily for family and friend gatherings (great for kids too!) and a party atmosphere. Salud!
