Close to the action (and traffic) of Hollywood, this former apartment building faces busy Franklin Avenue and is a quick walk to a nearby Red Line stop at Hollywood & Highland. There's nothing theme-y about the guest room decor, but larger rooms have kitchens with eating areas. There's a decent-size, heated pool, and the patio has lots of greenery. Guests at the hotel can secure dinner reservations and attend nightly magic shows at the Magic Castle, a private club for magicians and their admirers that's housed in a 1908 mansion next door. (Jacket and tie are required for men; kids are allowed only during brunch on weekends.) Pros: remarkably friendly and able staff, free Wi-Fi, good value. Cons: traffic-y locale, no elevator, small bathrooms.
