Kyoto Grand Hotel and Garden

Fodor's Review:

Formerly the New Otani, the Kyoto Grand may have new owners and name, but its mix of Japanese culture and corporate America remains in place. The "Japanese Suites" have tatami mats, futon beds, extra-deep bathtubs, and paper screens on the windows. The American-style rooms are somewhat plain and compact. Two of the restaurants serve Japanese cuisine at authentically steep Tokyo prices. The third serves straightforward contemporary food, including a daily lunch buffet for downtown's office crowd. The hotel is close to the Civic Center and state and federal courthouses. For those who seek a contemplative moment (or a scenic wedding spot), there's a ½-acre Japanese garden on the roof. Pros: on-site spa specializing in Shiatsu massage, unique Japanese garden, super-quiet. Cons: homeless encampments nearby (and throughout downtown); although rooms and public areas are updated, it's very old-fashioned.
