Catch an early-morning surf break or just hang out all day on Casa Malibu's private stretch of beach—raked smooth each morning. Directly on the sand, the comfy inn is a favorite of families, couples, and even a movie star or two. Though modest in decor and amenities, the views are unrivaled: to the south is all of exclusive Carbon Beach; north is Malibu's restored pier and Surfrider beach. The Pacific is your front yard—seabirds and dolphins your neighbors. Ask for a room with a fireplace for the complete experience. Each room is different in layout; a few are accessible only by stairs. There's no smoking on the property—even at the beach. Guests get the use of beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, and outdoor shower. Call the hotel directly to make reservations. Pros: stellar location, low-key beachy vibe, close to most of Malibu's best restaurants. Cons: summer weekends and holidays book up six months in advance, small tidy bathrooms.
