Chinese American Museum

Museums / Galleries, Downtown

Fodor's Review:

For a more personal look at the history of Chinatown residents, this intimate museum highlights the struggles, milestones, and achievements of Chinese-Americans, especially those living in Los Angeles. The exhibits are straightforward and simple, featuring many artifacts donated by locals who live in the area. They range from local contemporary Chinese artist Cindy Suryiani's mixed-media installation of rice scrolls and puppets addressing Americanism to historical photographs of L.A.'s original Chinatown, full of dirt streets and paper lanterns. One exhibit follows the evolution of Chinese neighborhoods, as the immigrants tried to re-create familiar urban landscapes, resulting in the various versions of Chinatown.
