If you can't quite make it to Italy, say, "buongiorno" to Naples in Long Beach! Consisting of three small islands in man-made Alamitos Bay, Naples features rows of quaint (but high-price) homes, each boasting its own eclectic architecture: vintage Victorians, Craftsman bungalows, and Mission Revivals. No cars in these front driveways, just boats ranging from lofty yachts to pedal rafts. To reach the area, park near Bay Shore Avenue and 2nd Street and walk across the bridge to meander amongst the streets with Italian names. To make your experience "molto buono," take a tour on a gondola through the canals by making a reservation (at least a week in advance) with The one-hour rides, upon authentic Venetian boats, take you through Naples in pure Italian style as the gondoliers treat you to a smooth water journey using the one oar "rowing" technique. You'll greet passing gondolas with a friendly "Ciao!" They may even sing you an Italian love song as the rides are quite popular with romantic couples, but groups of up to 16 people can be accommodated. Bread, salami, and cheese are served—you bring the wine. Rides cost $75 per couple, $20 each additional person, and run from 11 AM to 11 PM. 5437 E. Ocean Blvd., Naples, Long Beach, 90803. 562/433-9595. www.gondo.net.
