Grand Central Market

Markets / Bazaars, Downtown

Fodor's Review:

Handmade white-corn tamales, warm olive bread, dried figs, Mexican fruit drinks.hungry yet? This mouthwatering gathering place is the city's largest and most active food market. The spot bustles nonstop with locals and visitors surveying the butcher shop's display of everything from lambs' heads to pigs' tails; produce stalls are piled high with locally grown avocados and heirloom tomatoes. Stop by Del Rey, at stall A7, for a remarkable selection of rare chilies and spices, or pickup a hearty dose of Chicken Coconut Soup from Grand Tai Foods & BBQ at stall C2 for a rare taste sensation. Even if you don't plan to buy anything, the market is a great place to browse and people-watch.

Don't bother

We were hungry & hoping to find lots of fresh food choices here. Unfortunately this has become mostly an assortment of small Hispanic-oriented fast food places, with menus in Spanish. One featured fish, another Chinese entrees, but there was almost no real market--one table had fruit, another candy.
