While it's not exactly "down by the bayou," this order-at-the-counter outdoor café does serve a mean gumbo rich in shrimp, chicken, and andouille sausage. It's also the place for New Orleans–style po'boy and muffaletta sandwiches, jambalaya, and beignets (the Big Easy's take on doughnuts).

Canter's is a true LA experience. Many a deal has been brokered in this busy, well-organized eating space, and star sightings are common. It has the best Matzo Ball Soup (add carrots), hands down. Portions are huge, including the pickles, and you might want to share that pastrami sandwich. Baked goods in the deli are a Jewish food lover's delicacy, and parking is free with validation.
