For your trip to Los Angeles, you may want a beachfront location and more space than a typical hotel can provide. Some travelers consider apartment and beach house rentals, but we tend to recommend hotel suites and B&Bs instead. Why? Unfortunately, rental scams are prevalent. In some cases, potential guests have arrived to find that the apartment they rented does not exist, or that they are paying for an illegal sublet. Unfortunately, travelers have also lost their deposit money, or their prepaid rent in the past. Note: Never wire money to an individual's account.
There are few reputable providers of short-term rentals, noted below. But many Fodorites have turned to suite hotels, lodges, and B&Bs with apartmentlike accommodations to guard themselves from possible scams.
Vacation rentals from reputed Web sites like HomeAway (www.homeaway.com) and its affiliate Web sites like VRBO (www.vrbo.com) come with the Carefree Rental Guarantee (for a fee), which protects travelers in sticky situations, whether the home has been foreclosed on, or the owner has double booked guests, misrepresented a property, or withheld a security deposit.
From Malibu in the north to Long Beach farther south, most of the city's beach towns have waterfront hotels and inns with spacious suites and rooms. Some favorites include the pricey Malibu Beach Inn and Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, while the New England cottage-styled, all-suites Beach House at Hermosa and Hotel Erwin, Venice are comparative bargains with great ocean breezes.
Also consider cottages and B&Bs like the beloved Inn at 657, near the University of Southern California in L.A.'s downtown, or the Los Feliz Lodge close to the modern bohemian neighborhoods of Silver Lake and Echo Park. And off hip Abbot Kinney Boulevard, the Venice Beach Eco-Cottages marry form with eco-friendly practices.
