Anyone with a vinyl collection (or these days, a laptop or iPod) can call themselves a DJ, and in slash-happy L.A. (as in model-"slash"-actress) many try to be (as in model-slash-actress-slash-DJ). Lindsay Lohan, Tommy Lee, and Rosanna Arquette are just a few of the celebs who've taken turns behind the wheels of steel at Hollywood clubs, but it's the real turntable wizards who make the dance floor shake in this town. DJs Them Jeans and Steve Aoki from Dim Mak Records At Cinespace (Tuesday) play all the latest indie rock, but they aren't too cool to throw in commerical hip-hop and old-school gems from the likes of MC Hammer and even (gasp!) Vanilla Ice. Hipster kids eat it up.
DJ Morty at Dragonfly (Sunday)-He's been spinning his web of hip-hop and retro rock in L.A. for decades, and his specialty is the decadent sounds of the '80s. His, like, totally awesome retro mixes really burned up the floor after sharing the stage with the new wave cover band Spazzmatics.
