On the banks of the Truckee River, this 1885 wood-and-stone inn was at times a boardinghouse and a brothel. Now completely modernized, the uncluttered, comfortable rooms are simply decorated, with attractive, country-style wooden furniture and extras like flat-screen TVs. The cushy beds have top-quality mattresses, down comforters, and high-thread-count sheets. Bathrooms have claw-foot tubs. The affable proprietors are there when you need them, then disappear when you want privacy. Pros: Nice rooms, good value. Cons: Parking can be a challenge.
