Dragonfly
Dragonfly Review
Flavors are bold and zingy at this old-town, Cal-Asian spot, where every dish is artfully prepared and stylishly presented—and most important, well executed. The bright tones of Southeast Asian cooking inspire most dishes on the changing menu, which you can savor in the bright, contemporary dining rooms—one for sushi—or an outdoor terrace overlooking Main Street and the train depot. Lunch is a bargain, and there are lots of choices for vegetarians. Look for the staircase: the restaurant is on the second floor, not street level.

I was so astounded by the last reviewers' comments that I registered on Fodor's tonight, just so I could post a review. While its clear that he/she had a regrettable experience, it shows the danger of having only a few reviews of a restaurant to consider.
My husband and I have a vacation home on the north shore and have dined at Dragonfly at least 40 times over the last 5 years (most recently 2 weeks ago). We LOVE the food!!! The lunches are very tasty and reasonable ($10-$15 per person) and the dinners are fabulous! Fresh fish and meat, unique preparations--we have never had a disappointing meal.
The service is usually very good, and yes, Billy (the chef/owner) always calls diners the next day if the reservation is made by phone.
I agree with the reveiwer from New York who commented on the surprising sophistication of the restaurant. My husband and I have been living in fear that the good reveiws this restaurant has earned over the years (check the usual suspects) will result in Billy being recruited away to the Big Time in SF, LA or NYC.
Luckily for us, we think the beauty of the lake and lifestyle of the Tahoe Basin keeps he and his family in Truckee.
To calibrate my review, my other favorites in the Lake Tahoe area are Moody's, the Lodge (in Truckee), Plumpjack Cafe, Wolfdales, and the West Shore Cafe (in Homewood). The food and service at Dragonfly is in the league of these.
Do give it a try, and decide for yourselves. I think that you will agree! -

Where do I start describing the awfulness? First of all, the $15 "special" appetizer of a shrimp tempura roll was disappointing; it was overpriced for the portion (one shrimp cut into a four piece roll) mushy, and had a soapy flavor (I believe because of an herb they used). Even though I left two pieces on the plate, the waiter never asked how it was; I guess he knew the answer. Next, after a good twenty five minutes, the pork lettuce wrap I ordered for my meal arrived; it was absolutely oversalted and dry. I couldn't eat more than one bite and I sent it back. I have never sent a meal back in my life, but this was one meal I could not swallow. My friend ordered the Thai prawn curry soup. The broth was nice and the prawns were nicely grilled, but the noodles were overcooked and tasted like paste. The waiter compensated us for the pork wrap; but did not address the tempura roll, even after we told him it was terrible. My friend and I walked out with a $47.00 tab, anger and hunger. What did $47 get us? Nothing except a bitter taste, two bites of a horrible tempura roll, one bite of salty pork, a bowl of pasty soup, and two glasses of wine. I even spoke with the manager regarding the poor meal and slow service. He was glad that we "Filled in the blanks" about the evening's meal and said the pork was known to be salty. A class-act restaurant would have compensated us for the roll too, but no go. Thankfully Safeway was open late; we were starving. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of Dragonfly.
