Fodor's Expert Review Black Bear Lodge

1202 Ski Run Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, California, 96150, USA Fodor's Choice

Built in the 1990s with meticulous attention to detail, the original section of this 2-acre complex feels like an Adirondack resort, with lodge rooms and highly recommended kitchenette-equipped cabins with fine art, fireplaces, and 19th-century American antiques. The great room has rough-hewn beams, plank floors, cathedral ceilings, Persian rugs, and even an elk's head over the giant river-rock fireplace. In 2022, the owners purchased the neighboring former motel and renamed it the Rubicon Building. Though upgraded with a nod to the lodge accommodations and cabins, the building's rooms and suites aren't quite as appealing.

PROS

  • near Heavenly skiing
  • within walking distance of good restaurants
  • wine and beer bar

CONS

  • not staffed 24/7
  • lacks big-hotel amenities
  • though upgraded with a nod to rusticity, Rubicon Building quarters aren't quite as appealing
