MAY Bishop Mule Days. Entertainment includes top country-music stars, steer roping, barbecues, country dances, and the longest-running nonmotorized parade in the U.S. Admission is free. 760/872-4263. www.muledays.org.

OCT.

Lone Pine Film Festival. Every Columbus Day weekend, this town pays tribute to its Hollywood history with three days of tours, films, lectures, and Old West celebrity guests. 760/876-9103. www.lonepinefilmfestival.org.

NOV.

Death Valley 49er Encampment Days. Originally a centennial celebration held in 1949 to honor the area's first European visitors, this event draws thousands of people from around the world. The weeklong celebration includes art shows, organized seminars, walks, and dances. www.deathvalley49ers.org.

Shoshone Old West Days. Just outside of Death Valley National Park, this annual festival celebrates Wild West heritage. 760/852-4524.
