This lookout is more than 5,000 feet up in the Black Mountains. In the dry desert air you can see across most of 110-mi-wide Death Valley. The view is astounding: you can see the highest and lowest spots in the contiguous United States from the same vantage point. The tiny blackish patch far below is Badwater, at 282 feet below sea level; on the western horizon is Mt. Whitney, which rises to 14,496 feet.
