The visitor center at beautiful Matanzas Creek Winery sets itself apart with an understated Japanese aesthetic, with a tranquil fountain and a koi pond. Best of all, huge windows overlook a vast field of lavender plants. The best time to visit is in June, when the lavender blooms and perfumes the air. The winery specializes in three varietals—sauvignon blanc, merlot, and chardonnay—though in 2005 they also started producing a popular dry rosé. After you taste the wines, ask for the self-guided garden-tour book before taking a stroll.
