Beringer Vineyards
Beringer Vineyards Review
Arguably the most beautiful winery in Napa Valley, the 1876 Beringer Vineyards is also the oldest continuously operating property. In 1884 Frederick and Jacob Beringer built the Rhine House Mansion to serve as Frederick's family home. Today it serves as the reserve tasting room, where you can sample wines surrounded by Belgian art-nouveau hand-carved oak and walnut furniture and stained-glass windows. The assortment includes a limited-release chardonnay, a few big but very drinkable cabernets, and a luscious white dessert wine named Nightingale. Another, less expensive tasting takes place in the less photogenic original stone winery. If you're looking for an undiscovered gem, pass this one by, but first-time visitors to the valley will learn a lot about the history of wine making in the region on the introductory tour. Longer tours, which might pass through a demonstration vineyard or end with a seated tasting in the Rhine House, are also offered a few times a day.

We're new to this whole wine-tasting extravaganza--Beringer offered a great opportunity to soak up the feel of the Napa Valley. The property is lovely and expansive, and people were happily wandering about. We tasted but didn't tour, but they have tours for all interest levels varying from 30 to 90 minutes in length. If you are like us, just glad to be away from home, simply exploring the grounds with your camera can be enough. We did do the tasting, a bit of a brisk experience given how busy the area was. I would have liked to have more information than I was given on the different wines, since I'm a newbie, but overall, it's worthwhile.

Nice setting and good wine, but staff not very friendly in the tasting bar.
