Opus One

Fodor's Review:

The combined venture of California wine maker Robert Mondavi and the late French baron Philippe de Rothschild, Opus One produces only one ultrapremium wine: a big, inky Bordeaux blend. The winery's futuristic limestone-clad building seems to push itself out of the earth. The tour focuses on the costs of producing this renowned wine; you might find this emphasis a bit stuffy and pretentious. The facilities, though, are undoubtedly impressive, with gilded mirrors, exotic orchids, and a large semicircular cellar modeled on the Château Mouton Rothschild winery in France. Equally memorable is the wine-tasting that comes at the end.

  • Cost: Tour $30
