French-owned Domaine Chandon claims one of Yountville's prime pieces of real estate, on a knoll west of downtown where whimsical sculptures sprout out of the lawn and ancient oaks shade the winery. Tours of the sleek, modern facilities are available for $7, but the highlight is a tasting. The top-quality sparklers are made using the méthode champenoise, which means, among many other things, that the bottles are "riddled," or laboriously turned by hand, over a period of weeks to collect the sediment. To complete the decadent experience, you can order hors d'oeuvres to accompany the wines in the tasting room.
